Maxine Marx's perspective of Zeppo is interesting. According to her book, he was apparently the most rebellious growing up and at times too much even for Chico (like after Zeppo drove recklessly in an ice storm w/Chico's pregnant wife Betty as passenger). Maxine says she never really knew Zep because he was cold and tells a few other anecdotes about his reputation for being ruthless. Worked for him as an agent!

Thank you!

Okay... under Harpo Marxes IMDB and several other internet sources I've found, Harpo is credited as 'narrator' in an episode of "The DuPont Show of the Month" called 'The Red Mill'. I've put it on my imaginary bucket list to see this video. Do you have have information/clips of this that could help fulfill a fellow Marx Brother lover. Thanks!

I’ve never heard that, I’ve never read about that, either. If anyone else has information, please contact nphilipshaw, me too! Because to tell you the truth, Phil, I’d never heard of that!

Have you ever seen Harpo's final stage appearance on Allan Sherman's show? And if you have, is there a way I can access it online or something? Because I can't find it anywhere!

Your best bet may be to go on Google or Bing and search for it under video. If youtube doesn’t have it, they will. :)

I agree with you about Zeppo. It's really a shame that he was like that, when you look at him in the movies, he really looks like he could be a nice guy. I guess looks are deceiving. When I first started watching the Marx Brothers, I envisioned him being the fun kid brother, him being the baby of the family, that everyone teased but still really cared about, you know? What do you think caused him to become conceited and mean like that?

I think, again, personally, that he had a cold shoulder because he couldn’t do the funny stuff. Because yes he was the funniest, but people said he and Groucho were extremely similar in their comedy, and that Zeppo was one of the only people who could make Groucho laugh.

It bothers me a bit that you're considered the Marx Bros. expert on tumblr and that your blog is called the "#1 source". Personally, I've only read extremely flattering accounts of Zeppo. Everyone in the family seemed to have respected him a great deal.

I’ve read other things. I’ve read a lot of things about how he was polite, but he was incredibly conceited and had a bad attitude. I, personally, don’t like him. I’m not telling everyone to hate him. I’m just giving my opinion.

why do you hate Zeppo??

Two people asked me this so I’ll answer it one story;

In the 70’s Groucho was with this woman who was so cruel to him; she would hit him, shove him, scream at him, she even made him tear up pictures of him and his daughter. Not to mention she hid drugs in the front yard. Groucho couldn’t fight back because of all the strokes he had up to that point so he was very weak. When Groucho died, he left all of his money to his kids and left Erin, the woman he was with, a little money and an award he received. She didn’t like that but that’s another story. When Melinda, his youngest, she was going to sue about Erin abusing her father, and when Zeppo took the stand he said she was the sweetest woman he’d ever met and that she was perfect for Groucho, even though he witnessed the abuse.

if you could describe each of them, how would you?

Well, I’ll do this first:

Sweetest Brother (1 the nicest, 4 meanest)

  1. Harpo
  2. Chico
  3. Groucho
  4. Zeppo (people said he was extremely conceited)

And now personal descriptions:

Harpo- he was the sweetest of all of them, and he loved being naked.

Chico- sweet, sexy, amazing womanizer

Groucho- went from sweet little boy to angry man, but a razor sharp wit

Zeppo- personally, I hate him. I’ve explained a lot why, if you’d like I can explain again.

I had this dream a while ago that I was at some house, and it wasn't mine, but we were all calling it mine, and I was peevishly searching for the Marx Brothers. Then this storm shelter appeared in the backyard, so I went down inside of it but it was well furnished and beautiful and everything, so I was just down there shouting their names. Then all of a sudden they appeared out of nowhere and they all hugged me and Harpo threw me into the air and I woke up smiling and it gave me tingles.

Aw, that sounds wonderful! That must’ve been a great dream :) I would love to get hugs from Harpo.

Hi! I love your blog so much, it's so impressive! I just recently discovered the Brothers and I'm seriously addicted, they're geniuses! Especially Harpo. (: But I think what I love most is how above everything, they were brothers. And close ones at that. I was wondering, though, if you knew about any little-known stories from their younger days or when they were away from the camera. Thanks!

Thanks! About the stories, if you could be more specific about what stories, like of Groucho and Harpo, or Harpo and Chico, or whoever, that would be wonderful :)

Fun Fact

Groucho hated the sound of the harp so much, that at movie premiers, he would have to leave the theater so he couldn’t hear Harpo’s harp solos. He never knew why nor could he explain why he hated it, but he did. If you notice, in the films, Groucho is never around when Harpo plays.
